Peñíscola is a town located in the Bajo Maestrazgo area on the north coast of the province of Castellón. It has held the status of city since 1707 and since January 2013, Peñíscola has formed part of the 'Most Beautiful Towns in Spain' network.
It stands on a 'tómbolo', a rocky peninsula, joined to the mainland by a narrow strip of sand, which made its defence a lot easier, although occasionally it would flood and be buried under the sea. Due to the construction of the port and buildings on the strip, this geographical quirk no longer happens. The old quarter sits atop the rock, where the Castle of Papa Luna divides the Peñíscola coastline into two totally different halves. There are wide beaches both north and south of the castle's peninsula. The municipal limits of Peñíscola include one of the most unspoilt coastal mountain ranges on the Valencian coastline, the Sierra de Irta, which hits the sea either as low rocky plains or towering cliffs, such as the Badum. The mountain range occupies the southern two-thirds of the 81 km² municipal district. The northern part is a small alluvial plain shared with Benicarló that stretches from the sea to the summits of El Puig.
The climate in Peñíscola is warm and temperate, its average annual temperature is 17.2°C, with rainfall averaging 499 mm.
